Everyone should

All art should be appreciated for it is a reflection of our beliefs, the earth and life.
We all see it differently because we are all truly individual.

Artist's statement

Kim Walmsley is a self—taught artist who started exploring art at the age of 17 by copying small pictures out of the family encyclopaedia.

Kim is a descendent of the Yuggerah people of Beaudesert, Australian Aboriginals. Since becoming a mother of three, she has recognised the importance of connecting with her cultural heritage.

Kim has begun a journey of re-gaining the knowledge of her ancestors and of her past. Kim describes her belief: ‘’We are not just Aboriginal people. We are a culture, and a significant one.’’ Kim explores her connection to her people through her art and adds and original and contemporary feel to the traditional elements of Aboriginal design.

In her paintings, Kim explores numerous mediums and design elements. She has a distinctively original style. She creates a balance between shades of light and dark through the softness and vibrancies of her unique interpretation of the land and beauty of our culture with strong linear qualities.

Kim now makes her home in Toowoomba, an extinct volcano in a plain of Queensland, Australia. Like many of the other Aboriginal people who have travelled from their country to live in Toowoomba, she acknowledges the Giabul and Jarawoir people as the traditional custodians of this land. The people of the Yuggerah group were visitors of this land many years ago. Attending ceremonies on the outskirts of Toowoomba and Festivals in the Bunya Mountains with many groups from around Queensland and beyond, Yuggerah has a clear connection with this land and its part.

Art is the core of Kim’s being and she uses art to teach local youth, her second passion, the values and skills to survive in an ever changing Indigenous Australian culture. Kim’s art is an explosive expression of this connection with her traditions and knowledge for her culture and her connectedness to the earth and its elements.
